Flight search taught the world to shop by a single number, and airlines responded by making that number as small — and as incomplete — as possible. The headline fare is now an entry ticket to a series of decisions, each one designed to add money back. Booking well isn't about finding secret deals; it's about comparing honestly. Here's how skeptics book flights.

Reassemble the real price

Before comparing two fares, normalize them. Add to each:

  • Bags. Does the fare include a carry-on in the overhead? A checked bag? Basic fares increasingly include neither. Price your actual luggage, both directions.
  • Seats. If sitting with your travel companions matters, add the seat-selection fee — or accept the middle-seat lottery.
  • Ground transport. A cheaper flight into a distant secondary airport can lose its entire advantage on the bus fare (we did the full math in the two-airport guide).
  • Time. Give your hours a price. A two-stop itinerary that saves $90 and costs nine extra hours is paying you $10/hour to sit in terminals. Sometimes you'll take that deal — but take it knowingly.

The connection-risk audit

Cheap itineraries concentrate risk in connections. Three questions expose it:

  1. One ticket or two? On a single booking, a missed connection is the airline's problem to fix. On two separate tickets, it is entirely yours — a delay on leg one means buying a new leg two at walk-up prices. Self-connecting through budget carriers is how $60 savings become $400 losses.
  2. How short is the layover? Minimum connection times are calculated for everything going right. For a big international hub, treat 90 minutes as a sporting minimum and two-plus hours as adult planning — especially if you must clear immigration or change terminals.
  3. How late in the day? The last flight of the evening has no backup. A morning connection that misses gets rebooked the same day; an 11pm one gets a sad voucher and an airport hotel.

When to book (the honest version)

Forget the folklore about magic Tuesdays. The durable truths:

  • Book international trips 2–5 months out, domestic 1–3 months out as a general rhythm; last-minute fares trend brutal, and ultra-early booking rarely beats the mid-window.
  • Set price alerts the moment a trip becomes possible. Watching a route for a few weeks teaches you what "cheap" actually is for that route — the only knowledge that makes a deal recognizable.
  • Be flexible on dates before destinations. Shifting a trip by two days routinely saves more than any booking trick; flying the unpopular day (typically midweek) is the most reliable discount in aviation.
  • Peak season is peak for a reason. Shoulder season — the weeks either side of high season — is where price and experience cross most favorably.

Where the savings are real

  • The carry-on-only lifestyle deletes bag fees from every flight forever (the system is learnable).
  • Nearby alternate airports — evaluated honestly with ground costs — sometimes genuinely win, especially with a car.
  • One-way mixing: two singles on different airlines now frequently beat a round trip. Search both.
  • Points for flexibility: if you carry a travel credit card anyway, the points you ignore are a rebate you're refusing.

Where the savings are fake

  • The fare too cheap to include a cabin bag — by the time you add your actual life back, it usually loses.
  • The 45-minute international connection — that's not a layover, it's a prayer.
  • The arrival after midnight — saving $40 to land when transit has stopped and the hotel desk is asleep is a loan, not a discount.
  • Third-party booking sites with prices oddly below the airline's own — when something goes wrong, you'll discover what customer service costs at that price point. Book direct unless the gap is large.

The cheapest flight is the one whose full cost — fees, hours, risk, sleep — you calculated before buying. Airlines run the sorting contest; you don't have to shop like it's the truth.
